I’m not going to be shy about it, this week’s post is inspired by the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. I’ve no idea if the movie will be good at all, but Snyder can certainly craft a compelling visual. It’s also the first Sci-Fantasy property I’ve seen that serves up not just Driders, but also Griffons, which is an interesting choice. Regardless, a movie doesn’t have to be good to inspire fun ideas.
I’d be remiss to talk about Rebel Moon and not mention the ongoing lawsuit that Evil Genius has with Netflix. Many authors who you are familiar with work with Evil Genius, and it’s always bad when a media company tries this kind of underhandedness. You can find out more about it and sign the petition here. No one is calling for a boycott yet, so until they do enjoy Rebel Moon AND support Evil Genius’s effort to be recompensed for their work and publish it.
Griffons, while certainly grandfathered into the Starfinder setting as part of Pathfinder, aren’t explicitly stated out in any official material. You can find their converted stats in the Starfarer Adversaries: Legacy Bestiary which is a great resource that updates a lot of mythological creatures to Starfinder. What it doesn’t have is a Creature Companion option.
Creature Companions are Starfinder’s answer to Druid and Ranger’s animal companions from Pathfinder 1E. Fully fleshed out in Alien Archive 3, they are available to any class, and simply require feats and credits to acquire. You can find the full rules here. Options range from the cute pot-bellied Bulette to the huge Cloud Ray and a menagerie between, but there isn’t a griffon option there, so let’s fix that.
