Starfinder – Avatar

You may or may not know that James Cameron’s latest visit to the planet of Pandora just became available on streaming this last week. If not, you do now, and if you are like me, this was when you had a chance to catch up on it. It’s a long one, so plan to take breaks, but still a visual feast much like the first film.

Jake Sully in Way of Water

While watching, it occurred to me that not only had I never done anything with this Sci-fi / Sci-Fantasy property for Starfinder, I’m not sure anyone else has either. I quick look online at the usual places doesn’t turn up anything, so if there are existing conversions out there, I’m not aware of them. I should stress, however, Na’vi, Pandora, and all associated IP are from the Avatar films released by 20th Century Fox and presented here for fan use.

Looking at the established lore, most of the things in the movies are fairly easy to port over to Starfinder. The humans are humans, with access to pretty much all the power armor, mechs, and projectile weaponry presented in Starfinder (sans the magic, hybrid, and energy weapon stuff). The Na’vi are not anywhere near as advanced, so all their starting equipment should have the archaic trait (you can pretty much just use the Kish equipment off of Nethys). As to the various creatures found on Pandora, the Predator and Herd Animal base templates from Alien Archive will work, with the caveat that most creatures on Pandora have the following ability:

Telepathic Link (Ex) A na’vi can spend 1 hour and attempt a Survival check (DC 15 + 1-1/2 the creature’s CR) to form a touch based telepathic bond with this creature through their queue. If the na’vi is successful, the link functions as telepathic bond with the creature that lasts for as long as the two are connected through their queue. A bonded creature is considered trained in battle when carrying or fighting alongside the bonded na’vi. If either of the linked beings dies while bonded, the surviving creature suffers telepathic backlash, becoming dazed for 1 round and taking 3d6 damage.

Coastal Na'vi

Which brings us to the big, blue alien themselves. I went back and forth on it, but the Starfinder size chart lists 8 feet as the cut off between Medium and Large, and despite their slight frames, the na’vi are all above 8 feet in height, so they are a Large species. The rest is fairly straightforward, at least for the na’vi we’ve seen so far. I would use these stats for 4 and 5 fingered na’vi.

NA’VI

Ability Modifiers: +2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Cha

Hit Points: 5

SIZE AND TYPE

Na’vi are Large humanoids with the na’vi subtype.

BIOME ADAPTATION

Much like elves, na’vi quickly adapt to their biome and within a few generations take on secondary traits better suited to living in that environment. Jungle dwelling na’vi gain a +2 racial bonus on Acrobatics checks to balance and a 10 foot climb speed. Coastal dwelling na’vi gain a 15 foot swim speed, and a +2 racial bonus on Constitution checks to hold their breath. Other adaptations have yet to be observed.

DEEP BREATHS

All na’vi are able to draw oxygen from a variety of atmospheric conditions, and have a greatly expanded lung capacity. They are able to hold their breath for 10 minutes, and gain a +1 racial bonus against airborne toxins and pathogens.

KEEN SENSES

Na’vi gain a +2 racial bonus to Perception checks.

LOW-LIGHT VISION

Na’vi have a broad range of sight, and can see in dim light as if it were normal light.

TELEPATHIC LINK

A na’vi can spend 1 hour and attempt a Survival check (DC 15 + 1-1/2 the creature’s CR) to form a touch based telepathic bond with many Pandoran species through their queue. If the na’vi is successful, the link functions as telepathic bond with the creature that lasts for as long as the two are connected through their queues. A bonded creature is considered trained in battle when carrying or fighting alongside the bonded na’vi. If either of the linked beings dies while bonded, the surviving creature suffers telepathic backlash, becoming dazed for 1 round and taking 3d6 damage. Observed creatures includes (but is not limited to) ikran (banshee), ilu, pa’li (dire horse), thanatar, toruk, tsurak (skimwing), and txampaysye. This ability can also be used to commune with Eywa, the planet spanning consciousness that exists in many of the flora of Pandora, by connecting queues to the local bud of the network.

As always, if you like this or any of the other content here on Solo Run Studio I would welcome a little of your support through Ko-fi. Until next time Starfinders!
