Starfinder – Rotating Hilts

Watching the new Obi-Wan series something stuck out to me. First introduced in the Rebels cartoon, the Sith Inquisitors all have light sabers that are not only dual-weapons, they also all feature a relatively unique hilt setup that allows the blades to rotate like a fan. It’s not used very often in the show, nor on the cartoon, I think in part that is because while it is visually impressive it seems like it would cause the weapon to simply be harder to use with anything like precision.

The live action Inquisitor gets his hilt going.

That said, Starfinder features a host of one and two handed energy based melee weapons, so how would we bring something similar into the game? Armory introduced a small selection of grips and other weapon accessories, and I posit the rotating hilt can be applied in a similar manner.

OG animated Inquisitor shows how it's done.

Rotating Hilt, Twister

Level 6; Price 4,250; Bulk L

Weapon Types powered slashing melee weapon

Description

Available only for power slashing weapons, a rotating hilt adds a circular track/guard around the hilt of the weapon that when activated as a swift action allows the blade to rotate like a fan blade. Doing so uses a battery charge, but provides the user with a +1 bonus to AC when taking the total defense action, allows them to make attacks of opportunity while taking the total defense action, and gives a +2 item bonus to intimidate checks, but applies a -1 penalty to attacks with the weapon as it becomes harder to control.

Rotating Hilt, Hurricane

Level 12; Price 37,500; Bulk L

Weapon Types powered slashing melee weapon

Description

Available only for power slashing weapons, a hurricane class rotating hilt adds a circular track/guard around the hilt of the weapon that when activated as a swift action allows the blade to rotate so quickly it becomes like a solid circle around the hilt. Doing so uses a battery charge, but provides the user with a +2 bonus to AC when taking the total defense action, allows them to make attacks of opportunity while taking the total defense action, and gives a +3 item bonus to intimidate checks. If activated as part of a jump it provides a +8 enhancement bonus to the athletics check.
