The second (and probably last ☹ ) season of Pacific Rim: The Black came out recently. Unlike Gen: Lock, I felt like this follow up season was very strong. They had to move a little fast to wrap up all the loose ends they wanted to close, but it still felt like a satisfying end to the character’s journeys, and they never backed away from the brutal emotional cost of this quest through a warzone dominated by giant monsters and greedy profiteers.
I’ve covered the series before ( Here and Here, with updated Kaiju rules and Copperhead Here ) but in general I’ve focused on the antagonists of the series. This time, let’s change things up and look at the strange hybrid creature known only as Boy.
A year ago I wouldn’t have been able to adapt Boy to Starfinder without a bunch of homebrew content, but that was before the Evolutionist class playtest came out. A class built around the concept of a regular humanoid tapping into the power of transforming into some kind of monster is a perfect fit for Boy. You can very nearly stat him up as a human Evolutionist with the Vital niche, and I’d put him at about 6th level going into 7th throughout the series. The only thing we are lacking is something to reflect his extreme change in size. There are the Growth Glands, but those only increase size by one category, and it’s clear when Boy changes he is Huge, so rather than going with an Augmentation I think his kaiju form should be an Evolutionist Adaptation.
GIANT COMBAT FORM (6th Level Evolutionist Adaptation)
Requirements Vital Niche, with the Kaiju, Giant, or Titan subcategory
You can briefly transform into a powerful combat form that is vastly larger than your normal form. As a move action, you can spend 2 EP to increase your size by 2 categories. If you become Large, your reach increases by 5 feet, the amount of Bulk you can carry before being encumbered increases by 2, and you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to checks to destroy an object using Strength. If you become Huge or larger, your reach increases by 10 feet, the amount of Bulk you can carry before being encumbered increases by 4, and you gain a +4 circumstance bonus to checks to destroy an object using Strength. This effect lasts for a number of minutes equal to half your Evolutionist level (rounded down, minimum 1).
