Starfinder – The Tomorrow War

The Tomorrow War, the new scifi film out on Amazon this week, is a pretty solid action film. It tries to do a lot, with some parts being more successful than others, but all around I’d give it a solid B. There is one element, developed early on and touched on in the trailers, that I thought would make a great Starfinder opening game – the fact that the timeshifted soldiers are all basically level 5 commoners. The session 0 for that party is basically ‘make a middle-aged character with a real job’ so you have characters like research scientists, accountants, and school teachers suddenly thrust into this insanely deadly conflict. Could make for a fun game if you can get your players onboard, particularly if you find ways for their mundane lives to be applicable to their current situation as they start to get levels in an adventuring class and fight this terrible threat.

Of course, one of the other standouts is the monster design for the whitespikes. The reveal for these things is one of the early beats of the movie, so if you don’t want to spoil that moment stop reading now. I’ll push down another paragraph just in case.

These gruesome monsters are basically biological weapons. They have melee attacks that devastate, can hurl quills from their tentacles for an effective short range weapon, run fast, glide, and are able to communicate via roars, pheromones, and even what appears to be a rudimentary telepathic hive mind. So let’s get some stats ready for you.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Rudimentary Hive-mind (Ex)  Whitespikes act in concert and share a nearly telepathic consciousness through a blend of exuded pheromones, imperceptible movements of limbs, electrostatic fields, and other communication. All whitespikes within 30 feet of each other are in constant communication; if one is aware of a threat, all are. (Such awareness can spread along a “chain” of whitespikes under appropriate circumstances, potentially alerting distant whitespikes.) In addition, once per round when within 30 feet of another whitespike, a whitespike can roll twice and take the better result on a saving throw against a mind-affecting effect.

Voracious hunters, whitespikes live to feed and reproduce, and do both at an astonishing pace. If a breeding population is introduced to any ecosystem the whitespikes very quickly become apex predators and setout to consume all other fauna. They have marked sexual dimorphism, with the females being larger and more ferocious, as well as posessing cunning that seems nearly sentient.
