Starfinder – Shield Spell

One thing I’ve been noticing more and more in my Starfinder games is that there are very few spells available to the casters that provide an added level of protection. I’m sure there are good design reasons behind this, not the least of which is the level playing field that Starfinder gives to armor and casting which is very different from Pathfinder. That said, with the introduction of Shields as an item later this year, I feel like there is room for a classic spell to make it’s return.

Agent Coulson demonstrates the importance of shields

Classes Technomancer 1, Witchwarper 1
School abjuration (force)
Casting Time 1 move action
Range personal
Target you
Duration 1 min./level (D)

You summon an invisible disk of force that hovers in front of you, serving as a shield. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk provides a +1 shield bonus to EAC and KAC, which increases to +2 when you align the shield to protect against a single foe (refer to the shield rules from the playtest and the upcoming Character Operations Manual). The shield has no maximum dexterity bonus, no armor check penalty, is weightless and does not reduce your speed. However, the shield provides no protection against laser weapons, which pass through the invisible barrier as though it was not there.
