Since Night of the Living Dead zombies have been a phenomenon, and every so often they rise from their unquiet rest to take over popular media for a time. For the most part the zombies themselves stay the same monster, with the notable addition of the ‘fast’ zombie some 17 years ago, but the recent Netflix Korean period series Kingdom has introduced a new take on this classic monster.
A Kingdom style zombie uses the Fast Zombie variant with the following additions:
- they retain the DR 5/slashing
- they gain weakness to fire, and enter a dormant state indistinguishable from death in areas of heat greater than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius).
- they lose the quick strikes ability and gain a secondary bite attack that they may use as part of a full attack. This bite does 1d4 + Strmod damage, and carries the Resurrection Plant Infection supernatural affliction
Resurrection Plant Infection (Su) supernatural disease—bite; save Fort DC = 10 + 1/2 the zombie’s Hit Dice + the zombie’s Cha modifier; onset 1 minute; frequency 1/minute; effect 1d6 Con, this damage cannot be healed while the creature is infected; cure —. Resurrection plant infection is a supernatural affliction and can only be cured by powerful healing magic. It cannot be removed by simply saving against the disease. Only a successful casting of remove disease, or a heal spell or greater magic, can remove the disease. Anyone who dies from resurrection plant infection turns into a Kingdom style zombie in 1d6 rounds. The save DC is Charisma-based.
Due to the severity of this disease, adjust the CR of Kingdom style zombies up by 1.5.
Make sure your players are interested in a survival horror style game before introducing this threat, as it does not take long for this kind of zombie to spread it’s infection far and wide.
