Starfinder – Datadogs and Cowboy Bebop

Hello space cowboys and cowgirls! Alien Archive 2 introduced us to the squox, and rules for having a little animal friend that can help you in certain situations. You know who else had an adorable animal buddy? The bounty hunters of Cowboy Bebop, of course.

So forget that squox and and get yourself a datadog! You can even have one that is a corgi like Ein.

Deceptively Clever (Ex) Datadogs may look like normal dogs, but their intelligence is much higher, and they have a breadth of knowledge that no other canine possesses. A trained data dog, even though it lacks the ability to communicate with traditional language, can use the Aid Other action with any skill check it has a skill bonus in. This effectively means they will always aid on Computers and Engineering checks.

your datadog is a loyal friend and companion

Prerequisites: You own a trained datadog that has an attitude of friendly or helpful toward you.

Benefit: You can designate your trained datadog as your companion, which obeys your instructions, orders, and suggestions to the best of its ability. It won’t follow a command that would bring significant harm to itself, but it has your interests at heart and does what it can to aid you. While your datadog companion is within 30 feet of you, you gain a +1 insight bonus to Perception checks to notice technological hazards, and a +1 insight bonus to Computers and Engineering checks to disable traps.

Your datadog has evasion, as the operative class feature. In addition, when your datadog is adjacent to you and would take damage, you can use your reaction to intercede and take the damage instead.

In addition, your adorable companion is distracting. While it is adjacent to you, you gain a +1 insight bonus to Bluff checks to feint. If your datadog is within 10 feet of you, you can instead gain this insight bonus to Bluff checks to create a diversion, which can allow you or your datadog to attempt to hide (your choice of which when you attempt the Bluff check).
