Starfinder – Greater Krayt Dragon

The Mandalorian is back, with all the sci/fantasy/western goodness of last season and a little bit more just for the baby Yoda fans out there. It’s been a few weeks since the first episode of season 2 released, so hopefully it’s not a spoiler for too many folks to learn that for the first time since KOTOR we had an on screen Greater Krayt Dragon.

There are many Star Wars table top RPGs from a host of great writers out there, and you can even find a few fan write ups of the aforementioned beast if you want to play in that system. That said, I’m a Starfinder guy, and I can’t wait to toss that chonky desert monster at my players, so let’s stat him up.

First off, its big. Not Godzilla-like Kyokor big, but nonetheless very sizable, so I’m going to go with the max values for Huge (see page 255-256 CRB). Earth glide is a given, since the beast burrows through sand and rock like they are water. It’s a big lizard with a breath weapon (krayt venom is basically a line of acid) but less than sentient intelligence, so the dragon type, but while ‘dragon’ might be in the name this is technically drake (though with 10 legs it might have more in common with the behir.) Definitely Swallow Whole, and Blindsense (vibration) to sense bantha and such on the surface, to rounds things out. So putting the pieces together:

GREATER KRAYT DRAGON

CR 12

XP 25,600

N Huge dragon (earth)

STATISTICS

Str +8; Dex +0; Con +5; Int -3; Wis +4; Cha +0

Skills Athletics +27, Survival +22

Other Abilities earth glide

ECOLOGY

Environment desert and rocky wastes

Organization solitary

Massive apex predators of various desert environs, greater krayt dragons burrow through earth and sand until they detect anything moving that might be prey (which is virtually anything the krayt can swallow.) Surfacing, they devour whatever caught their attention before returning below the ground. Canny hunters, they maintain lengthy periods of torpor punctuated by brief but devastating hunting sessions, so they don’t deplete their hunting grounds too quickly. They also seem to have adapted to modern starship technology, as they are able to detect the vibrations of low flying star ships and remain hidden below ground as long as they are present.

Very few have the fortitude to hunt greater krayt dragons, but for the few brave and/or fool-hardy enough to do so the pay off can be quite lucrative. Their meat is prized for both its taste and rarity, and the pearl formed in their gut is a valuable jewel that can also be used to craft solarian crystals.
