Starfinder – This Island Earth

I’ll circle back to the Incarnum inspired stuff soon, but it is October so we need to have at least one spooky fun post. In the past I did Starfinder stats for the alien from John Carpenter’s The Thing, which isn’t something I’d ever want to have to go against as a player. I’ve been trying to think of another iconic Sci-Fi alien, but unlike the xenomorph and the hunters from the Predator (both which have been converted, if you are interested), I wanted to go further back. Which brought me to this handsome fella.

A blast from the past

This, of course, is the Metaluna Mutant from This Island Earth, a sci-fi film from 1955. In the context of the movie the Mutant and his people are a slave race to the tyrannical Metalunian’s, bred to serve their frailer psychic masters. They are made out as villains in the movie, likely just because of their appearance, but it’s not like the Metalunians are playing the angels either. If you want to know more, check out the movie, or for a better time, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie from 1996 (which encapsulates This Island Earth but adds much needed humor).

But back to our Mutant. He’s big, but not so much that he qualifies as a large creature. Strength is definitely a key element, what with the whole ‘bred for labor’ thing, and he’s got those claws so definitely doing something with that. That said, these things have a hefty brain, no mouth to speak with, and were an intelligent enough servitor to the Metalunians that they eventually rebelled, so that means adding in some psychic stuff for them. Sorta like the Swarm, actually…

Selectively bred and mutated from peaceful insectal omnivores, the mutants of Metaluna have increased in size and mental facility considerably since their humble origins. Quite intelligent, with psychic power and the capacity to use technology if they can ever get their claws on it, a squad of mutants should give most adventurers pause. They have existed under the tyranny of the Metalunians for much of their existence, and have had their fill of it. Rising up against their masters and all that would aid them, the mutants will have autonomy or death!
