Star Trek Discovery is back this week, and to celebrate I thought I’d stat up one of the many alien monsters that threatened the crew during the original series. Much like last week’s alien, the M-113 alien (or Salt Vampire) disguises itself in order to move freely among its prey, but the mechanics by which it accomplishes this deception is completely different. Also, these things must love fast food.

Environment ruins of M-113
Read Thoughts (Su) a M-113 alien is able to constantly read the thoughts of sentient creatures around it. This functions as a permanent detect thoughts, but effects all creatures within 30ft of the M-113 alien. A DC 16 Will save negates the effect for one round, but regardless of the save the target remains unaware of the effect. The save must be made every round another sentient creature is within 30ft of the M-113 alien. This is a a mind-affecting ability.
Psychic Disguise (Su) as a free action every round, the M-113 alien is able to cloak itself in a psychic illusion, and can choose how it appears to each individual within sight of it. This is largely an automatic ability, and the M-113 alien appears to be simply a unassuming member of whatever species is viewing it by default (gaining a +10 inspiration bonus to disguise checks to appear to be a member of that species). As long as the M-113 has spent three rounds reading the thoughts of an individual, it may choose to impersonate a specific person against that individual (gaining a +15 inspiration bonus to the disguise check). The disguise is constant, and the M-113 alien does not need to concentrate to maintain this illusion. This is a a mind-affecting, sense dependent effect.
Salt Dependency (Ex) a M-113 alien must consume several grams of salt a day. Any day that it is forced to go without salt a M-113 alien gains one negative level, and this is cumulative for every day. These negative levels never become permanent, and they can be removed by a single dose of salt sufficient to the alien’s needs, but should a M-113 alien ever go 6 days without a dose of salt it dies.
Salt Drain (Ex) as a standard action a M-113 alien may attempt to drain the salt from a creature, making a single attack against the EAC of the target at its full attack bonus. If struck the target takes 2 points of Constitution damage and is staggered for 1 round. The target can attempt a DC 14 Fortitude save to negate the staggered condition. A single successful hit is enough to fulfill a M-113 alien’s daily requirement of salt.
Once part of a vibrant society of powerful psychics, the M-113 alien’s culture collapsed due to an eventual scarcity of the salt they need to survive. A few of the creatures yet live, eking out an existence among other species and hiding their nature with their mental powers. Should salt supplies ever become low though, other beings become a viable food source.
